Getting Back Into the Swing of Things

July 29, 2015

by: MaryNeal Meador

So, you’ve been out there all summer either boy in hammock with doghaving fun on the beach or working at a McJob, traveling to exotic places or going to movies just for the Arctic temperatures, seeing your old friends or lying around reading, working on your tan or strengthening your thumb muscles on that controller. What you haven’t been doing is thinking about writing papers.

We get that.

The first paper of a new semester is often really intimidating. Getting into the swing of classes and assignments can be tough, even if you’re thrilled to be back at App. For new students, it can be completely paralyzing. You want to do well—desperately—but you don’t know where to start. You’ve never had to deal with being away from home, making all your own decisions, coping with an overwhelming amount of homework, or trying to reach a balance between your work and fun times.

We’ve been there.

It’s no wonder that when you read that assignment, you hear a buzzing noise in your head.

14189998534_tiles_fbYou can’t get started. Your laptop weighs 3 million pounds. Your feet won’t move. You try to think about the assignment, but your brain keeps saying, “Look! A bird!”

The University Writing Center is here to help.

We don’t just work with you on a paper that’s already written; we are also here to help you take that first big step. We can

  • go over the assignment carefully with you to make sure you understand what your instructor is looking for
  • brainstorm topics with you
  • work with you to create a detailed plan for what to do first, then second …
  • help you recalculate your path if the first plan didn’t work out like you’d hoped

And when you have something written, we’ll help you strengthen the weak parts and polish the strong parts.

You’ll walk out of here feeling better, we promise!
