How to Stay Calm in the Last Weeks of the Semester

titleby: Chelsea Zimmerman

Toward the end of the semester, essays, projects, and exams are piling up.  The situation becomes almost as unbearable as poor Gollum’s search for his “precious,” but don’t lose heart! We at the Writing Center are here to help.

Get a head start.

The Shire wasn’t built in a day, and your paper won’t be either.  My advice is to start your paper early; that way, you won’t have to deal with the stress of an all-nighter.  gollum

Take care of yourself.

Speaking of all-nighters, ditch them. You won’t do your best work, and your sanity will suffer.  Plus, who says you can’t have second breakfast? Save the pizza and twelve cups of coffee for another day, and eat healthy during the weeks leading up to finals.  This will guarantee that you’ll feel – and write – your best.

Take a break.

If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, simply take a break. Even if you feel like you don’t have time, sparing 15 minutes to take a walk, search for the One Ring, or grab a snack will make all the difference in saving Middle Earth – or your paper.  a pint

Show up for a session.

Don’t stress the topic. Get organized.  Polish your “precious” assignment.  All this and more can be accomplished by working with a consultant in the Writing Center.

I hope this article gave you the confidence you’ll need to climb the Mount Doom of work ahead of you.  Just follow this simple advice, and summer will be here before you know it!
